You can determine how fast and how far you walk for a set period of time each day. This type of exercise equipment allows you to increase the level of resistance to intensify the exercise.

If you want to protect your joints, walking does not put as much pressure on the joints as other forms of high impact exercises. Walking is a normal daily activity, whereas some of the positions required for other types of routines are not normal ones for the joints of the body.

The main thing to remember is that you do need to warm up and stretch your muscles before you begin your walk and to stretch the muscles when you finish to keep them toned up.
