Identity Theft Protection Tips

Did you know that the crime of identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in this century? In this day and age of clicking this and clicking that to do financial transactions, many people have gotten to be very lax at taking measures for identity theft protection. This is sad because of the rate of growth of this crime, as well as the weeks, month, and even years that need to be spent by the victims to get the whole mess straightened out again.

One of the big problems is that the creditors have heard every story in the book. So when you call them and say that you have been a victim of identity theft, and that charge for the plasma TV and the fur coat are not yours, their natural tendency is to yawn and say "yea right, so when can we expect a payment?" Not all creditors are that way, but you will find that reaction more often than anything else, and the burden of proof lies on YOUR shoulders to substantiate the claim that an identity theft has actually happened.

Interestingly enough, the steps you should be taking for identity theft protection are more than anything else just common sense. Would you give the keys to your new Jaguar convertible to some 16 year old kid that you dont know? Of course not, but by not taking common sense steps to protect yourself, that is pretty much what you are doing.

Identity theft is not limited to online activities, but is almost as rampant for offline transactions, so dont go blaming the Internet for this growing problem. Say you are at a restaurant having a nice dinner with friends. When the bill comes, you whip out your plastic and give it to the waiter, right? That is just as dangerous, yet people do this every day. But they have probably not read the occasional story in the newspaper where that waiter has written down your account number and then ordered a bunch of stuff with the account number, the 3 or 4 digit code on the back of the card, and the expiration date. That is ALL that is needed to place an order for merchandise. When you give your credit card to someone, do you see how easily that could happen while that card is out of your sight for those 5 or 10 minutes?

Rather, take your bill to the cashier and do not let the credit card out of your sight. Yes, perhaps a bit of inconvenience, but it is NOTHING compared to the tremendous amount of inconvenience you will suffer if you become a victim of identity theft.
