Developing Success Through Goal Setting

Goal Setting is your Road map to Success

Success is truly a mind-set that anyone can achieve if they will take the steps necessary to reach their goals. The first step, of course, is goal setting. There is no road map in the world that can help you get where you are going if you don't know where that is. You must decide on a destination before you can chart your course on a trip just like you must set goals before you can develop a plan to achieve success in life. A commercial airliner never leaves the runway without a detailed flight plan in place and 99% of the time, the plane lands exactly where it had intended to. What if you had a 99% chance of achieving success by setting goals? Well, the odds aren't that sure, but it isn't far off. Most experts say that people who take the time to write down their goals have a 70% chance of achieving them. People who bother to even have goals at all have a 7% chance of achieving them and people that don't set goals have a 100% chance of not achieving them.

Big Goals Attract Big Things

Once you understand the importance of setting goals the next thing you need to know is what kind of goals to set. Jack Canfield, co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series and author of many successful motivational books including "The Success Principles", says the next step is creating goals that are so big that you would be blown away if you achieve them. He talks about a principle that came of Harvard called B-HAG which stands for "Big Hairy Audacious Goals" and it says that people that set these types of goals have an even better chance of achieving them than by setting "reasonable" goals, because small dreams attract small things and big dreams attract big things. Would you rather set a goal of making a million dollars a year and "fall short" by making $888,000.00 or would you rather set a goal of making $50,000.00 a year and "succeeding" at it?

What Types of Goals to Set

Once you know the importance of goal setting and raising the bar on those goals it is important to know what types of goals to set. You should have goals for each of the important areas of your life including your spirituality goals, your relationship goals, your financial goals, your health and fitness goals and your educational goals (people of all ages should have goals to continue educating themselves even if it is just to read certain types of books). Setting goals regarding each of these important areas will help you become a more well-rounded person who is successful in all aspects of their lives.

Conclusion

Without goal setting, going through life is likely trying to drive across the country without knowing where you are going. While you may have some fun along the way, you are very likely to get lost and it is impossible to arrive at your destination if you don't know what your destination is
