Get Excited, Achieve Your Goals

The fifth letter in the word change, G, presented a bit of a challenge. G for goal? That seemed a bit obvious, and this whole thing is about goals anyway. G for grow, for gravitate, for-for what?

Then I remembered what one of my business mentors used to say: “Nothing ever happens until somebody gets excited!” It’s true, and it’s the topic of this article looking at the word change.

Now you might be thinking “Get excited? Do you know how much work I have to do to accomplish this goal? Do you understand that I could be out playing golf, but instead I’m studying so that I’m ready to pursue the next step in my action plan? Get excited, right!”

Well, no, I don’t know just what you’re going through and how hard you’re working to achieve your goal. And, I know that the actions you need to take to reach your goal aren’t always fun. And, yes, you need to take time occasionally for some down-time, some recreation that will give you a break. But, yes, you should get excited!

Get excited about the fact that you are going to realize the changes in your life that will result from achieving this goal. You’re not just trying to reach a goal because it’s a goal; you’ve established that goal because it is going to bring about a change (there’s that word again!) in your life that you sincerely want. The rest of your life will be better in a way that you can visualize and see yourself experiencing because you’ve put forth the effort to achieve the goal. That change, that result should be getting your blood pumping! Get excited about it because it is going to be real!

Get excited about how much you’ve learned and how much you’ve already accomplished on your journey to your goal. Stop for a moment and appreciate the fact that you have learned and accomplished things already because you committed yourself to a worthwhile goal. Think about how the achievements you’ve already accomplished make you feel. I’ll bet you’re more positive now than you were when you began the journey. I’ll bet you’re even sort of proud, in a positive way, of some of the things you’ve accomplished that you were a bit concerned about doing. I’ll bet you believe more in yourself and your ability to achieve success than when you started. Stop for a moment and focus on those things. You’ll get excited!

Finally, think about how you feel. If you’re pursuing a goal that’s truly important to you and you’re starting to see some progress, you’re certainly experiencing a happiness that you didn’t have before. Think about it. You set a goal because there is a change you want in your life. You’ve probably wanted or thought about that change for a long time, maybe years, before you got serious and set a goal to go for it. Now you’re doing it!

Someone said that success or happiness is the pursuit of a worthwhile goal. You are now in that pursuit. You’re doing what successful people do; you are pursuing a worthwhile goal, and you’re going to achieve it! I think that gives you every reason to Get Excited!

I’m a husband, father, and grandfather. I’ve lived a life I couldn’t have dreamed of when I was young. I’ve learned that dreams and goals can be achieved with a good plan, focused effort, good mentorship, and commitment. Humans are designed to be achievers. Visualizing the future and setting and achieving goals to make it a reality is uniquely human! I’m still dreaming my future into existence and setting goals to make it happen. Achieve Your Goals Through The Magic Of Consistency

Consistency seems to be a boring idea at first sight. It lacks glamour and excitement. But, when you look more closely, consistency is anything but boring. It contains the secret of achievement and success. It is the key to an almost magical power than can transform lives.

Consistency means repeating the same behaviors regularly and without exceptions. Consistent behavior is the opposite of erratic behavior. Skipping workouts is an example of erratic behavior. Performing all or most of your workouts is an example of consistency.

Consistency creates powerful habits; lack of consistency and exceptions mean that you have to start building the habits all over again.

Consistency allows the seeds to grow and the fruit to arrive. Regular, patient, consistent action is necessary to achieve good results. Even winning the lottery requires buying a ticket and entering the numbers.

A woman who won the US $162 million lottery is quoted as saying, that she played the same numbers consistently for two years. She didn’t play it once or twice and give up as so many people do.

She steadfastly believed that her dream of winning the lottery would be realized. Consistency may occasionally work even in the notoriously risky world of gambling.

Recently, I read an outstanding article by T.J. Walker, the public speaking and communication expert. He commented on how often communication breaks down on the internet because of a lack of consistency.

Ezines, blogs and podcasts often only last for one or two issues and then they disappear. Either their creators ran out of material or foolishly expected success after one or two efforts and gave up when the results of their efforts were disappointing.

Most marketing gurus insist that sales only come after about seven email messages have been sent to a list of potential customers.

Many would be entrepreneurs lack the patience and consistency to send out even seven messages to their lists. They are unlikely to succeed in winning the trust of their customers.

Nearly any goal worth achieving demands regular and consistent efforts. If you want to achieve a black belt in a martial art, you need to show up to one training session after another whether you feel like it or not.

I know, from many years of experience, that students who show up regularly for training almost always achieve their goal of becoming a black belt.

However, I have had some very talented students who lacked patience and only showed up sporadically. When their progress up the ladder of success seemed too slow to them, they gave up and disappeared.

When I examine my martial arts students at grading sessions, I often congratulate them for just being there. I tell them that they are already half way through the grading because they have shown up and in the famous words of Woody Allen: “80% of success in life is just showing up.”

By showing up, my students have shown that they have guts and are willing to accept the fact that they might look foolish if they forget their syllabus or perform it badly. Not every one can face this possibility and I even had one student give up the martial art because the grading seemed too worrying.

One person who has never failed to show up in the UK and about a third of the rest of the world is Queen Elizabeth II. For over half a century she has shown up at one formal and informal occasion after another in good and bad times. She has traveled thousands of miles around the world to achieve her goal of being a servant of her country and the commonwealth.

Today was her 80th birthday and most of the country and even the media showed their appreciation for her consistent adherence to duty. One paper actually called her “Elizabeth the Great”.

Greatness only comes when efforts are consistent. Champion teams win championships not because they win every match but because they consistently play well and with determination and, as a result, win most of their matches.

An individual loses weight because they stick consistently to their diet and to their exercise regime. A body builder adds muscle weight because he consistently attends the gym whether he feels like it or not. The champions do not give up when they feel tired or bored or when results seem painfully slow.

Daily efforts create habits and habits make it easier to make those daily efforts but it still takes hard work and the determination to follow through every single day no matter what.

To achieve your goals repeat your efforts every single day. Turn up in the gym or wherever you need to. Don’t be like my step brother who was once told: “You won’t turn up for your own funeral!”

Occasionally you make have to make an exception and miss out on the desired behavior. One way to avoid exceptions is to perform the behavior you have planned as early as possible in the day before the rest of the family and the cat start demanding your attention!

Another way to avoid exceptions is to make a list of your most important daily behaviors in order of importance. Stick it on your wall and read it as soon as you get up. This way, your consistency will not falter because of a poor memory.

Repeat the desired or planned behavior daily and with as few exceptions as possible and you will make gradual but certain progress and eventually achieve your loftiest goals and dreams.

Even if you don’t achieve all your goals and dreams, you will have at least become a great character and a person of value because you did what you planned to do on a daily basis. That, at least, is a goal worth achieving.

Goal Setting and Getting: The BD3 Approach to a New Year

Brainstorm

Get yourself in a quite place where you are not likely to be disturbed. Let your mind focus on these questions:

What would you like to accomplish in the next two years?
What would you like to change?
What would you like to be?
What would you like to have?
What would you like to do?
Where do you want to go?
What would you like to contribute?

Now spend 5-10 minutes writing down whatever goals come to mind. For this exercise, there are no limits. Let the ideas come freely, without evaluation. Dont just think about them, write them down. Remember, the weakest ink is better than the strongest memory. Come up with as many goals as you can. Now you are ready to…………

Decide - on two things:

1) Choose one goal from the brainstorming list that you most want to accomplish in the next two years, and

2) Decide it will happen. Decide that no matter what, you will get this goal sometime in the next two years.

This is a very powerful decision to make. Because change can occur in an instant, deciding that you will get this goal begins the process of change, and begins to build momentum.

To continue building momentum, now its time to………..

Do

Do all the necessary things to make it happen. One way to do this is to work backward from your deadline to now. For example, if your goal is to save a certain amount of money by the year 2000, how much will you have to save each year, each quarter, each month, each week, each day? In this way, you are able to break a rather large goal down into daily actions. Remember, once you set and commit to a goal, you can only have two results: you get the goal or you have excuses why you didnt.

Distinguish

Distinguish between what is working and what is not. If what you are doing is working, keep doing it. If what you are doing is not working stop doing it and try something else until it works.

How to Keep Your Focus on Your Home Business Goals

As you begin your new home business you will find there will be hundreds of distractions that will fight for your time and attention.

If you are new to working from home you will have to deal with such issues as family interruptions, friends, neighbors, television, radio, visitors, email and phone calls.

You must structure your time and set a schedule to work on your home business. If you were working for someone else you would not expect your friends and neighbors to stop by for a visit.

You must clearly explain to the people you know that this is your job and your can not stop to chat simply because you are home.

People may think that your job is less serious because you are working from home.

You must remind yourself of the reasons why you choose to bring your profession home. Was it to have more free time with your children, to earn more money than your previous job paid, to create more freedom for yourself and your loved ones?

Remember your home business should be treated as a real job. You are the person who makes the decisions now. You must organize your time without someone else telling you when you should work and take care of your business.

Schedule a portion of your workday to answering emails and written communications and returning important phone calls.

One hour in the morning and one later in the day should be fine. Be sure to be consistent so you do not get distracted from your other tasks.

Focus your time on your most productive activities and find a third party to assist with less important tasks if you need to.

When you are first getting started and perhaps you are in the middle of working on a project - and you don’t quite know if it is going to be the success you hope for, it is very easy to get distracted and go on to something else that looks more promising.

You will learn with experience what types of projects and tasks excite you, which are the best fit for your knowledge, skills, and resources.

But in the beginning when you are first getting started for the first time then this can be a bit confusing, understand this is normal.

The most important thing for you is to take what you have now and turn it into a success.

It is more important to finish what you start than it is to jump from project to project.

When you jump to another idea or project you have to repeat all the things that you did on the last idea or project.

You may find that it is easy for you to start your work but you have a problem with sticking to it until it is finished.

Make a promise to yourself that you will do your best to finish the projects you start before you begin the process of starting something new.

Do your best to work on something you believe in. Get excited about your work.

Be sure to break down the tasks involved in getting large projects up and running. If you approach the smaller tasks individually they will be easier to handle than if you tried dealing with them all together.

Take care of your health by exercising and eating healthy food. The better you feel and the healthier you are the more you will be able to focus on your business.

Write down a list of the goals you wish to acheive with your home business and the time in which you want to achieve them.

Try making a list of the top 5 things you want to accomplish, then set a timer for 20 -30 minutes. When the timer goes off drop what your doing and Move on to the next task.

Exercises such as this can keep you up and excited As you work towards a deadline. It will automatically set your mind to focus on what needs to be completed in a specified time.

Take a break every 2 hours, go for a short walk and get some fresh air, talk to a friend on the phone or read a few pages of a motivational book.

The success of your home business is entirely and completely up to you and the decisions you make.

Success is within your reach when you keep your focus on your goals.

Creating a Life List

Last year I appeared in a Broadway musical. I was not a major character, but it was a major event. For three years I had had on my Life List “See a Broadway show.” And now there I was, sitting up on stage waiting for my turn as a contestant in a musical spelling bee. I lost after the second round, but I didn’t lose at all. I got to check off two items from my Life List–the one about seeing a Broadway show, and also “Do something truly gutsy at least twice a year.”

Creating a Life List gives us vision and direction. We may have a vague notion about what it is we want to do, see, and experience in our lifetimes, but writing those things down is often the first and most important step in accomplishing our dreams.

I separated my List into three categories:

1. Skills I want to learn
2. Places I want to go
3. Experiences I want to have

Because of my Life List, I’ve backpacked in Iceland, learned to make fire by rubbing two sticks together, completed and sold two novels–the List goes on and on.

And it does go on and on. Because as soon as I can check off one item, I make sure to add another to the List. There is always more to learn, more to try.

So here’s my challenge to you: Sit down for an hour tonight, or get up tomorrow and spend some time alone, and ask yourself:

1. What do I still want to learn?
2. If money and time were no object (you need this to dream big), what places on earth would I love to see?
3. What are all the things I can think of right now that I’d love to do during my lifetime, no matter what other people think?

It helps not to organize your thoughts. Just start with a clean page and write, write, write. You can be neat later. You can be practical much, much later. For now, just think and dream. See what it is you actually want out of this life. See who you really are, underneath that rational, grown-up exterior.

And when you think you’ve listed everything that’s on your mind right now, pick one item off the List. Want to learn French? Take the first step. Look on-line at your community college catalog. Scan your library’s website for language tapes you can check out. Or even rent a French movie to put yourself in the mood. It doesn’t matter how small or large the step is–what matters is taking it at all.

Dreaming is wonderful, writing it down is even better, but it’s still up to you to walk forward. Do just one thing every day or at least every week on your own behalf. More things are possible than we know.

Now let’s practice finding that out.

Goal Setting That Works

So, youve decided to make a New Years resolution. You write it down, tell everyone about it, and then break it three days later. Then, you spend the next six weeks beating yourself up because youre such a failure. However, you arent the problem; your resolutions are. Setting resolutions just doesnt work for most people. Instead, why not try a combination of affirmations and general goal setting.

Instead of saying you arent going to smoke any more and becoming frustrated when you give in to your caffeine addiction two days later, set a goal of stopping your habit by the same time next year. Write your goal in your nicest writing on a good piece of paper. Then, below the goal, write some affirmations.

Affirmations are an important part of goal setting because many times you have to believe you deserve to reach your goal before you achieve it. If using affirmations sounds silly, think of it as prophesying your future or blessing your life.

If you are writing affirmations for stopping that smoking addiction, you might use:
1. I deserve to stop smoking so that I can be healthy.
2. I dont even like smoking.
3. I will stop smoking by next year.
4. I wont even crave a cigarette.

Now, tape that goal sheet up beside the bathroom mirror. Every day, look at your goal and then look your reflection straight in the eye and repeat your affirmations out loud in a firm voice. The first few times, youll probably be so afraid people will overhear you that youll be tempted to whisper, but eventually, it will get easier.

Finally, dont be discouraged if you dont see any results right away. If you do feel a bit down about your lack of success, just repeat your affirmations another few times. After all, if kids can do poorly in school because people keep telling them theyre not smart, it makes sense that you can reverse the process and fulfill good expectations, even if they are your own.

Reach Your Goals- Set Clear Intentions

It is from intentions that all things manifest. To intend to go to point B from point A will result in the arrival at point B. However, there must be an action. To arrive at point B, there must be action taken at some point.

Lets say that point B is a football game. Those that arrived must have intended to arrive there. Not everyone arrived in the same way (the action). Some may have walked, others rode the bus, some took the train or subway, or drove. But, no matter how they arrived, they all intended to arrive at the game. It is intention combined with action that produces desired results.

No action is to have no intention. To have an intention to go to the football game and take no action means that there was never any intention. So it is with life. To be wherever you are in life is based upon intention or lack thereof. Everything we have is stems from intention.

Everything we lack is from stems from a lack of intention Be clear about intentions. Intentions are not wishful thinking. Make only intentions upon which you plan to take action.

To walk blindly is not always the wisest decision. The intention of what you are asking for is all important. For that is what you will create. This is what will manifest.

To have no intention is also an intention and leaves you open to be blown around. A time of chaos may follow.

Be clear on your intention. Today I intend to_________________________________________

Brain-Compatible Goal Setting - How and Why Goals Drive Motivation

It is important to write down your goals, since that action imprints them on your brain. Before writing your goals, identify what price you are willing to pay to achieve them. These may be material, emotional, or spiritual. At some point, expose your barriers and excuses; write them on a separate piece of paper. This list is not meant to be dwelled on; it is meant merely as acknowledgement celebrate as you conquer each barrier or excuse.

If you are finding it difficult to decide on what you want, you could consider what author Michael Losier advised in his book, The Law of Attraction.
He teaches a process of listing what you don’t want as a prelude to making your definitive list of what you do want. Mark Victor Hansen co-author of Chicken Soup for The Soul said, “Once focused on the positive, you act as a magnet, to attract those things you hold in your mind.”

You may have heard of S.M.A.R.T. goals. The acronym stands for specific, measurable, attainable/agreed on, relevant, and timely. My colleagues and I created an alternative formula. Here it is.

  • Your goal statement must always be succinctly worded in the present tense and in the positive. Use action and emotional words. Avoid negative words, future tenses, and comparisons (better, some). Let me explain why your goal statement must be positive and in the present tense. The powerhouse of enriched learning is the subconscious mind. It is highly literal, has no concept of time, and processes in images. If you use future tenses, such as “I will…,” then the subconscious mind will not act on it since it only operates in the NOW. Since there is no picture for a negative word (not, never, won’t), then it just ignores it. If you state, “I am not attracted to chocolate cake,” the subconscious only processes, “chocolate cake.” A better wording would be, “I love foods that contribute to my body’s health and vitality.”
  • It must be realistic and a slight stretch. Push yourself just a bit.
  • It must be specific, yet your assessment of your success must be flexible. By specific, I mean avoid comparative words. If you state, “I will be more disciplined in my work assignments,” that is far too vague. To the subconscious, the word more may be anywhere from .0000001 percent to 100 percent more. So be specific. Celebrate each of your accomplishments, even if it is not 100 percent of what you planned. In the book, The One-Minute Manager, the authors counsel that if you’re off course, just do a course correction don’t jump ship! Use any slip-ups as opportunities to learn.
  • Your goal must be measurable. If you can’t gauge how well you’re doing, how will you know that success is actually occurring? Ensure that you pick a target date. It must also be paced so that you can recognize your achievements at specific points along the way. This is the step where you take your overall goal and break it down into bite-sized modules. This chunking-down can be by subject, time, place, or resource.
  • Once your mini-goals are established, create action plans for as many as you want. This is so important. Without an action plan, all you have is a wish-list.
  • Announce or share your goal with people who will be supportive. This emotional investment puts your reputation on the line.
  • The last element is In Your Face. Write out your goals, cut out magazine pictures, or draw them yourself. Paste and post the images all over your world, including your bathroom mirror. Keep it in your face and top-of-mind.

Most people don’t set long-term goals, let alone write them down. Some fear failure and criticism if they are less than 100 percent successful. Others don’t know how to set goals. The vast majority do not appreciate the value of setting goals. The benefits of written goals are simple. They provide direction, momentum, and motivation.

Top 10 Tools to Reach Your Goals Quickly

We all have dreams and goals. Some of them are simply “wishes”, like winning the lottery or sailing to Tahiti. But we also have goals that are vital to our futures and the well-being of our families. And yet many of us make little or no progress toward achieving our most important goals. We wait and hope, but get no closer to our dreams. It doesn’t have to be that way! We all know people who soar from one project to another, achieving their goals and living the life they want. How do they do it?

    1. Clarity of purpose. For a dream to become a goal, it must be specific. While it’s fun to dream about being rich, it takes courage and hard choices to decide exactly how much money you want and how you are going to earn it. Being “thin” is an image; losing 23 pounds by your birthday is a goal. In life, we probably can’t have it all. You can lose 23 pounds, or you can have the cake and ice cream. Your choice. Be clear.

    2. Commitment. There’s a story from ancient Greece about a general who landed his troops on the beach, then burned his ships. He wanted each soldier to know there was no turning back, no retreat, no alternative to victory. Once your goal is clear, emotionally commit to achieving it. There are no alternatives.

    3. Talk about it. This is called “accountability”. Once you’ve defined your goal and committed yourself to achieve it, start talking about it! If you want to lose weight, don’t blame your spouse for buying ice cream if they don’t know and understand your goal! Talking about your goals makes them emotionally real and powerful. It allows people to help you reach your goal and support you along the way. Some people will also criticize or undermine you. Don’t talk to them.

    4. Write it down. This is basic, and one of the oldest, simplest and most powerful techniques for achieving any goal. Write it down! Describe precisely what you want, how you will earn it, when you will have it, and the benefits you’ll receive from achieving your goal. Write the details. Write the colors, the shapes and the dates.

    5. Write it every day! Every morning, use a small card or a corner of your appointment book to record a short description of your goal where you will see it all day long. Don’t carry the same card day after day! If your goal is worth anything, it’s worth a minute of your time to write a simple sentence describing your dream and focusing on your priorities. Do this every morning.

    6. Have a plan. Create a map for getting there. And put dates on it! A goal to retire at age 40 has no meaning without a savings and investment strategy. A goal to create your own business is just a fantasy without a plan to attract investors, find a location, hire staff and sell your goods or services. The beauty of a plan is that it allows you to

    7. Take action every day! “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Any goal that is worthy of you, is worth a few minutes of your time and some of your energy every single day. To one day write a novel, write a chapter this week. To open your own business, read a business magazine today. To create a more loving family, give someone a hug today. To be salesperson of the year, make a phone call right now!

    8. Use constant affirmations. One of my clients is a PGA golfer. From the moment his ball lands on the green until he sinks the putt, he repeats over and over “I will make this putt!” He repeats that phrase as many 200 times before every putt! Do you think he would be more, or less, successful if he spent those moments thinking, “I just hope I don’t miss it.”? Tell yourself what you want to hear!

    9. Review, and re-commit, often. Never be afraid to review your goals, evaluate whether you are still 100% committed to them, and re-commit to achieving them. If your values, or your choices have changed, change your goals accordingly, and be honest about it! And if your goal still fits, run to it with all your heart!

    10. Celebrate each milestone! Never wait to have a party! Each deposit in your savings account deserves a checkmark on the calendar and a hug from your partner. Each day without a cigarette deserves a smile and congratulations from your loved ones. Every step toward your goal should be documented and celebrated! When you get discouraged or have doubts, your record of past successes will quickly get you back on track. Not sure about this? Ask any marathon runner whether they count each mile on their run to the finish line! Celebrate each and every milepost on your path to victory!

Goal Setting - Discover the Magic of a Challenge - Tips from a Life Coach

Fast forward your life to the results you want with a well crafted challenge. Craft a challenge that will empower you to discover your greatness and the many opportunities around you, one that will bring an element of fun when you are drowning in details, one that will creatively bring forth options and new perspectives, one that will bring the possibilities out of your head and into your world, and one that will create an environment for achievement.

“Most people rust out due to lack of challenge. Few people rust out due to overuse.” Unknown

As a life coach I have a toolbox overflowing with resources to help individuals set and achieve inspiring goals. One resource that I created is a Fast Forward Challenge; this is a customized challenge that will get you moving faster toward your goals. This is one of my favorite tools because of its many benefits:

    Challenges are Empowering

When you are discovering your greatness and the opportunities available to you, you are going to find strength in yourself. As you become more committed to the achievement of your goals, you will become more committed to you.

    Challenges are Fun

Challenges are a fun way to play with your goals and hold yourself accountable.

    Challenges Creatively Bring Forth Options

When you become creative you open yourself to a new perspective. When you change your perspective you discover more options.

    Challenges Free Your Mind

Often when people develop challenges they bring out something that has already been racing through their mind and causing a distraction for them. Facing a challenge gives you permission to not have the answers; it sets you up to explore the possibilities.

Challenges Create An Environment For Achievement

Nobody takes on a challenge just so they can fail, but people forget about their goals all the time. Say the quotes out loud, can you hear and feel the difference between “I have a goal to complete a marathon” versus “I have challenged myself to complete a marathon.” A challenge sounds like a higher level of commitment.

When have other people created a challenge that moved you closer to a goal? What did you find motivating about those challenges?

One way to move more quickly to the achievement of your goal is to take the Fast Forward Challenge created by Jodi Rosenberg.

The Fast Forward Challenge will teach you a tool professional coaches employ to help their clients reach the goals they most want to accomplish.
