Diet, Nutrition, Health And Garbage - Are You A Garbage Can And Grease Trap?

Billy Morris dreamed he was standing third in line to see St. Peter. The first lady in line got a smile and a nice warm handshake from St. Peter. He also gave her a white card. She boarded a beautiful white and gold bus. The next lady directly in front of him received no smile, no handshake and a blue card with a nod from St. Peter toward the plain blue bus. Billy further dreamed he stepped up and also got a cold stare, no handshake and a blue card. He asked, “Sir, why did the lady before this last one get a white card and board that beautiful white bus, but the other lady and myself only get a cold shoulder from you and a blue card for a plain blue bus?”

“Well son, the first lady appreciated so much the fine gift from God of a healthy body, she kept it as she knew God would have wanted.” Billy thought for a moment and said, “Where does the blue bus go?” “I honestly don’t know Billy, but we sure have a lot of them.”

As Billy walked toward the plain blue bus he looked up and asked God for a second chance. He woke up in bed! He had his second chance.

I hope all those that would get a blue card will wake up! It is time for your second chance. We all know there are many good sources of nutritional advice on the web as well as proper exercise. All diet’s claim to be the only one, so consider the source. The best way is to go the nutrition way and let the weight fall off naturally, at least walking a half hour a day. Do not go for miracle pills and magic food combinations. Just do proper foods and proper exercise being as well informed as you can. Think about our Billy in his dream. I am sure with his second chance he thought, “She kept her body the way she knew God would have wanted.” Surely you owe him that much. Then you can do more to help others the way God intended.

Healthy Eating on a Budget

Many people think that because they are on a budget they cannot eat a healthy diet. It is true that fresh, organic produce and other healthy foods can be more expensive. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy healthy eating on a budget.

The first thing you should always do before you go shopping is plan the menu for each meal. This will force you to bypass the unhealthy snacks and instead zero in on exactly what your plan calls for. After you check out what you have in the cupboards and you have decided what the meal plan is for the coming week, you can make up your shopping list. By taking a shopping list with you, you are less likely to go for the impulse purchases. Plus planning ahead what meals are going to be prepared means that you will have those healthy foods on hand. You won’t be so tempted to grab something at the closest fast food restaurant.

Here are some useful hints and tips for healthy eating on a budget.

1. If you cannot afford to buy fresh fruit and vegetables, then purchase those that are frozen in their own natural juices or water. Not only are they a good alternative to fresh products but will also keep for ages. If you do buy fresh produce, it is often cheaper to buy them already bagged rather than by the piece. Not only is this cheaper, but you will have more for both lunch bags and to provide for other meals as well.

2. Instead of spending money on the cheaper cuts of meat which are generally high in fat, go for the much smaller leaner cuts instead.

3. When wandering around the store, if a product is on your list and is on sale then purchase double the amount. Quite often you will find two for the price of one specials on canned fruits and vegetables.

4. Instead of buying small packages buy the large packs and then divide them up into small containers. This is less expensive than when you buy the smaller separate packs of the same item.

5. Read the labels on the packets and compare the store’s generic brands with the more well known types. Often the stores own brands are a lot cheaper than brand names and will more often than not contain the same ingredients. In fact, the store brand is often produced by the same company that makes the well-known brand!

These hints and tips for healthy eating on a budget should ensure that you are able to cook healthy meals for your family, no matter what your circumstances.

Eating a healthy diet does not have to mean time-consuming menu preparation or boring meals. To discover delicious alternatives you never knew could be healthy, be sure to check out my Eating Healthy for Life blog at: http://www.eating-healthy.org

Healthy Foods - All About Good Things To Eat!

Did you know that our society is in the midst of a health craze? Any way you turn there is information about being healthier. Eating healthy foods is obviously one of the best ways to improve your health. However when people hear those two words they think of boring, bland foods that are widely available as a natural food co-op. Although healthy foods are things that you have eaten almost every day, at times just prepared in a different way.

Healthy foods as well as eating habits are pleasing both to the palate and plate. However one must remember that healthy foods is that the closer the food is to its natural state the healthier it is for you. Firstly you can start changing your eating habits to more healthy foods by cutting down on the number of prepared foods that you eat. Prepackaged foods are loaded with preservatives and artificial ingredients. Sure packaged foods are convenient, but healthy foods can be also, especially once you get into the habit of preparing them.

Healthy foods are very easy to prepare. In fact it doesnt take much time or money to eat healthy foods. Here is a simple example of a fantastic meal that is easy to prepare, low-priced and features healthy foods. Grill lean hamburger patties until well-cooked. Next place the patties on whole grain all natural hamburger buns. You can serve the burgers with a large tossed salad as well as a side of steamed green beans. Follow this easy meal with a serving of fresh fruit for dessert. This meal can be on your table in less than half an hour and involves all healthy foods.

Grilling or baking lean meats, fish or chicken does not take to long to prepare. Tossing a salad of fresh greens and vegetables can easily be done while the meat is cooking. Alternatively you can round out the meals by using fresh or frozen vegetables. For added variety to your meals you can try using different healthy foods that you havent tasted before. Check the produce section of your local grocer which is stocked with a whole range of healthy foods including exotic fruits and vegetables. A good number produce sections offer recipes and tips to show how to prepare fruits and vegetables that you may not be familiar with. This is a great way to expose your children to a variety of healthy foods. Of course, you can experiment with many different fresh herbs that are also available in the produce sections that you can try to add different tastes to your meals.

You can prepare healthy foods on a regular basis to prepare fast nutritious meals. Healthy foods can also be used in more exotic recipes when you have the time. Healthy foods can also be prepared ahead of time and frozen for later use. You can be assured that when you prepare your own frozen foods, you know that they are not full of artificial additives and preservatives. Encourage children to get involve in the preparation of the healthy foods, thus creating a time when each can share about their day. Eating healthy foods do not have to cost you time or money, and they are certainly a better option for you.

Eating To Increase Your Brain Power

Twice a year, during finals week at universities across the country, thousands of bleary-eyed students camp out in the library or their living rooms, surrounded by stray soda cans and crumpled candy wrappers, some with their arms figuratively hooked up to an IV of coffee.

Unfortunately, this is merely a dress rehearsal for life in the real world, where its very common for people on all levels of the corporate ladder to arrive at the office early and leave late, sometimes skipping breaks and staying all night to finish that important proposal or marketing report.

Or what about frequent business travelers who spend weeks at a time on the road, catching little sleep in unfamiliar, uncomfortable motel beds? A steady diet of candy bars and soda, while providing quick boosts of energy, can do much more harm than good.

Arent there better, healthier, or even easier ways to obtain stamina and brainpower? There are certain foods that can increase energy, stimulate focused thoughts, and enhance motivation that dont wreak havoc on your body and are healthy for you as well. They arent miracle foods, some hidden secret that people in some remote part of the world have been using for centuries, or a recent fad; rather they can be found in your grocery store aisles, and they arent expensive.

Medical studies have told us that protein and carbohydrates play a big role in the chemical transmitters in our brains. Tyrosine, a chemical produced by protein, enables our brain to make various other chemicals that increase alertness and energy. These chemicals, notably dopamine and norepinephrine, cause us to react more quickly to stimuli, think clearly, and work with better accuracy.

Your best bets for protein-rich foods are the meat, fish and poultry group and the dairy group. Meat, especially, contains plenty of protein, but dont overload on fatty meat like lamb, pork and lunch meat. High fat foods can produce the opposite effect of mental alertness: a mind-numbing and lethargic feeling. Stick with lean beef, chicken, and fish, and avoid things like whole milk and hard cheeses.

Of course, common sense plays a part as well. Dont eat ten pieces of chicken to stay awake, because if your body already has enough stored alertness chemicals to draw from, it wont produce more of the same. You wont stay awake twice as long or have twice as much energy, but you could gain twice the amount of weight. Stick with the usual recommended serving sizes for these food groups.

Carbohydrates, such as pasta, potatoes, and breads produce insulin in the blood stream, which in turn makes a chemical called tryptophan, which in turn produces serotonin. Serotonin puts the breaks on stress and tension and produces a calming effect.

When you eat a potato or some pasta for example, it calms your nerves and your mind becomes more focused. To achieve this effect, however, dont combine these foods with protein-laden ones, because the process will be blocked.

Complex carbohydrate foods are the way to go to achieve the calming effect. Starchy foods like such as bread, pasta, crackers, rice, or other grains arent so fattening if you leave off the fattening toppings.

Medical studies have shown that the way to eat for a healthy and productive mind is to eat for a healthy body. Having a balanced diet is essential, but forget the old standard of four food groups that was drilled into our elementary school heads, because the new food pyramid has taken its place.

Meat has taken a back seat to grains and breads, and the serving sizes have changed. Fruit and vegetables each have their own group, and their daily servings, along with those of the bread and cereal group, have increased. Daily allowances are based on the needs of an adult over 25 years old.

At the bottom of the pyramid lays the bread, cereal, rice and pasta groups. Six to 11 servings per day should be consumed; examples of one serving are a slice of bread, one ounce of cereal, or a few crackers. Three to five servings of vegetables and two to four servings of fruit a day are the next step in the pyramid.

Milk, cheese and yogurt are good sources of the milk group, of which two to three servings per day should be consumed. You can count a cup of milk, yogurt, or one and a half cups of ice cream as one serving.

Even though some people have wiped their plates clean of meat, it still remains on the pyramid and, yes, its still considered healthy. This group contains not only meat, poultry, and fish, but eggs and beans as well. Only two to three servings should be eaten daily.

At the topmost point of the food pyramid sit fats, oils, and sweets. These should be consumed sparingly and should never replace those groups below them on the pyramid. In general, most people should follow the guidelines of the food pyramid to obtain all the required vitamins and minerals.

Keep in mind that a well-balanced diet is the key to good health and general well-being. Stocking up on vitamins and herbs may not make you any healthier than someone who balances his or her diet with choices from several food groups, and may in fact make you less healthy.

Your energy and brain power can also be increased by healthy eating. While this is a long-term effect, bursts of stamina and mental clarity can be achieved in moderate daily doses by drinking caffeinated beverages or by snacking on carbohydrates and protein.

It seems that every day a new wonder food, beverage, or vitamin supplement pops on the market, promising miracle cures and better health. The effects of food, however, are generally more subtle and realistic. One rule to remember is that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Chocolate and Alcohol

You might be wondering how chocolate and alcohol products are so great for your health…
Well, I know its hard being good all the time, so here are a few of my favourite treats. Theyre great because they feel a little bit naughty, but theyre all organic products so you cant help but feel theyre in some way good for you too.

Every little helps… all these products are stocked by my local supermarket, so no fuss and the prices are reasonable too!

Old habits die hard as the saying goes, Ive been drinking Cider and Blackcurrant for… well, a number of years now… So when I began the organic crusade, I quickly discovered Westons Strong Organic Cider. Ok, so they didnt spend too long thinking about the name but its definitely accurate! After just a couple of bottles I was definitely a little merry and as its organic it really tastes zingy and fresh, so much so Ive even been able to stop adding the blackcurrant! I know what youre thinking, but this is definitely not a drink for 13 year olds! Ive even persuaded my Mum to share a bottle with me before now!

Anyway for those of you with more grown up tastes theres wine made from organically grown grapes. Ive not been brave enough to go for completely organic wine, (made without the preservatives, etc.) as Ive heard it really doesnt last well. But if theres anyone out there that has, Id love to hear about it!

And then theres Chocolate, we all know that chocolate releases endorphins helping to reduce stress and create the happy vibe! Eat chocolate with a higher cocoa content and youll benefit from a lower fat content and cocoa also fights free radicals. (Those nasty cancer causing atoms.) So what Im saying is eat good quality chocolate and youre fighting the risks of cancer. Not only that but for women the endorphins released are the hormonal equivalent of an orgasm, which you can have whenever you want! Fantastic!

But dont forget fantastic as all these things are theyre treats - so everything in moderation! Ensure you stay within the recommended healthy limits for alcohol consumption and even if it is organic, if you eat too much chocolate youll need to put in a lot more effort at the gym!

Nutrition and the brain is important, but it doesn’t have to be confusing or time consuming. You may already be eating some of the things you need. In fact if you are trying to eat heart healthy you are already a good step ahead of many out there. Lower fat diets are also good for the brain.

However, one of the things that most of us struggle with is getting fruits and vegetables into our diet. Missing the vital nutrients of fruits and veggies is not only bad for us in general, but may impact the quality of our minds as we age.

To start with, brain nutrition requires a diet that is strong in antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances that protect cells from damage by particles called “free radicals”. Damage from free radicals can break down cells, harm DNA and cause a host of other problems. In fact some scientists believe that free radicals may be a contributing factor in the break down of the brain as we age as well as in the formation of diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. Antioxidants are the first line of defense against the damage caused by these particles.

Vitamins C and E are powerful antioxidants found in a healthy diet, but they are not the only ones. Fruits and Veggies are loaded with antioxidants which makes them an essential part of nutrition and the brain.

In addition to C and E it is an important part of brain nutrition to get plenty of B complex vitamins. B complex vitamins help the body maximize the energy it gets when it burns food. The brain is one of the largest users of both oxygen and energy, making it critical that we are getting the most out of our food. B complex vitamins also help protect nerve cells from damage as well as assist in red blood cell production (which helps with oxygen transport to the brain). B complex vitamins are found in both vegetables and whole grains.

Minerals are also an important component of nutrition and the brain. Minerals like Iron and Manganese play a role in helping the body use certain vitamins as well as produce various enzymes and neurotransmitters. These are critical in the functioning of nerve cells.

The reality of trying to build a diet focused on nutrition and the brain is that we don’t always have the time or desire to eat the recommended daily requirement for fruits and vegetables. It may be necessary to turn to supplements that contain these ingredients in order to get the levels we need.

Supplements that contain vitamins and minerals have been out there for years. However, recent advances have produced some that are specifically geared for the brain. Not only do these supplements include the items mentioned above, they also contain herbs and other compounds that have been shown to enhance the brain. Herbs such as Ginkgo Biloba and Ginseng, which increases blood flow (and thereby oxygen) to the brain as well as improves mood and memory. Compounds such as huperzine A, which protects neurotransmitters from being destroyed in the body may also be included in these supplements.

As with any supplements, consult a medical expert familiar with these ingredients before including them in your diet. While usually safe, there can be interactions with certain prescription drugs so make sure you do your homework. Otherwise, if you are concerned about brain nutrition and are having a hard time getting to all your fruits and veggies then supplements can help. Either way it should be a priority to get the nutrients your mind needs on a daily basis if you wish to keep your mind sharp well into your later years.

The Best Diet to Reduce Cholesterol

Nowadays many people suffer from cholesterol, because they tend not to pay as much attention to what they eat as they should. Fast food and take out has gained a lot of ground and eating healthy food is more and more of an abstract idea.

Everybody knows that fat is essential to our body because it is a very big source of energy. However, you can get your energy from other substances besides fat, which in higher quantities is very bad for your organism. It especially affects the circulation of the blood, because it raises the levels of cholesterol in your blood, which can lead to heart attacks.

The type of diets suggested in this article have as purpose reducing the amount of fat and cholesterol in your body up to the required level. Both these diets have as goal decreasing the dietary fat and cholesterol, limit the intake of sodium, increase the quantity of fiber in your diet and lower the amount of calories, in order to reach a normal weight. The amount of calories that one should get every day is about 1100 for women and around 1400 for men.

Now, for better understanding what has to be done, we must first find out what cholesterol is. First thing to know is that blood is pumped by the heart and dilivered to all the body through arteries. The role of the blood, amongst other thing, is to carry oxygen and nutrients throughout your body. When your level of cholesterol reached a certain point above normal, the unnecessary cholesterol is left behind, remaining in the arteries. Throughout the years the cholesterol left behind forms a waxy substance which hardens or even blocks the flow of the blood. Organs than are very likely to become damaged.

Another thing to know is that cholesterol is made by two sources. The first one is the liver, which produces all the necessary quantity of cholesterol that your body will ever need. The second source of cholesterol is by eating animal products, such as meat, milk, eggs and many more. So, in order to keep the cholesterol level within normal limits, one should reduce the dietary cholesterol.

Another way of reducing your blood cholesterol levels is by eating as less saturated fats as possible. The saturated fats are those who stay solid at the room temperature. There also are some vegetables whose fats act like the saturated fats that I have told you before, therefor they should be avoided. Those vegetable fats are cocoa butter, palm oil and coconut oil.

While there is a plethora of drugs on the market that promise to lower your bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol, taking medication is not always the best option. What to Juice and Why: Vegetable Juices

During a juice fast, select juicing materials and teas specific to your health conditions. Most of the people I see in my practice do well on Dr. DAdamos, Eat Right for Your Type Diet (www.dadamo.com). Because of this, I recommend juicing those fruits on the Highly Beneficial and Neutral Foods Lists specific to your blood type.

Organic vegetables are the best type to use, but if you cant find or afford those, wash whatever you can find thoroughly before juicing them. And, if you dont know your blood type, here is a short list of vegetables juices with the maladies they are good for:

Vegetable Juices:

AsparagusKidneys, diuretic, blood purifier, bowel health, soothes nervous system (Note: urine will turn dark and have a different odor to it when you eat or drink a lot of asparagus. This is normal and harmless and will pass.)

Beet greensGallbladder, liver, osteoporosis.

(Note: never drink it straight as it can temporarily paralyze your vocal cords, cause hives, increase the heart rate and give you alternating chills and fever. Hmmsounds like a good reason to stay away from beets altogether! They sure do taste earthy.)

Brussels sproutsGood for diabetics and hypoglycemia, makes for healthy skin, increased male potency and stomach ulcers.
