One of the most effective methods of getting something unpopular done or doing what you don’t feel like doing is the 5 minute rule.

A case in point is this article. I really don’t have the time or the inspiration or the feeling or rush of creativity. There is no guarantee that this will be accepted, promoted, published or even read, but I agreed (with myself) to write a couple of articles every week. So, I just do it for 5 minutes.

5 minutes is usually spent doing what? Channel surfing? Waiting for a list of shows to go through? Waiting for a bus? Waiting in traffic at a light? Waiting for a tea? A grocery store checkout line up?

There once was a parody written in MAD magazine about activities to do during television breaks. There were all sorts of products to make the most of the 15 second to 2 minute commercial breaks. Activities included: 3 word crossword puzzles or half-filled in games of X’s and O’s. The more sophisticated products included sure grip shoe soles and a hallway-mounted-hand grip for those quick sprints to the washroom. As ridiculous as it was, it just went to show how many things one could do during those short, boring breaks.

So, what about something productive, like exercise, reading a non-fiction book, cleaning out your desk, booking an appointment or spending some quality time with a family member. Even a few minutes of petting the family dog goes along way for improving the pet’s trainability.

In the case of exercising, there are some days when I do it to clear my head, some days when I really enjoy it and some days I take it like bitter medicine. Most days I start off taking it like bitter medicine. It is to be expected. You are going from slow to fast, so you need to warm up the engine. The best way, is just to start moving. Of course, when you are in a sleeping bag and you have to answer the call of nature, there is plenty of motivation to get you out of the bag. Or if you have a dog that has to be put outside. I am sure that most parents never had to worry about an alarm clock when they had kids. It is a different story with teenagers.

This is where the 5 minute rule comes in. Almost anyone alive can exercise for 5 minutes. The same goes for avoiding eating the wrong foods or drinking or smoking. You can usually last for 5 minutes without eating junk food, drinking alcohol, making sarcastic remarks or smoking. This delay tactic can often work for people who are trying break a habit. Often, it only takes that short period to overcome the craving.

Getting back to exercise, if you really, really feel bad after 5 minutes of exercising, then it might not be your best day. Even then, you can often just push it for 15-20 minutes. If you still feel lethargic, then it is not one of those days for training.

The beauty about the 5 minute rule is that most of us can endure 5 minutes of just about anything boring. It is getting started that is the most important. So, stop reading this and do something useful for 5 minutes. It works.

All cultures throughout history have placed a significant importance to symbols. Long before the development of modern communications, ancient cultures used symbols as a way to share information. The ancient Celts left behind a long history of symbolism and artistry that endures today.

The Celts are though to be the earliest Aryan settlers in what is now Europe. It is thought that the Celts were driven westward by succeeding waves of Teutons, Slavs and others. Referred to by the Romans as Gaels, the Celts were once the predominant race in what is not Britain, Ireland, France, northern Italy and parts of Spain.

The Celts are thought to have reached the apex of their influence in towards the end of the third century B.C. It was a matter of time before the Celts fell before the great legions of the Roman Empire.

Relegated to the northern reaches of Britain, including Ireland, the Celts split into two factions, one dominating Ireland and Scotland. The other sect came to predominate what is now Wales and the rest of Britain. Like many pagan cultures, the Celts were earth worshipers and had a particular interest in the sun.

There was a great belief among the Celts that all things on the earth were interconnected. No where is this belief more apparent than in the intricate knot work that has come to symbolize Celtic life. Often thought to be the work of angels or other celestial beings, the knot work is now a staple in Celtic designs that can be seen in paintings, sculpture and jewelry. Celtic knot work jewelry is very popular and requires a great deal of artistic ability to produce. The delicate braiding can be seen in a variety of rings, pendants and bracelet jewelry.

The cross shape that dominates the Christian religions is actually a creation of the Celts and predates Christianity at least several centuries. In the center of the cross is often found a circle, thought to represent the unity of nature. Since the sun played an important part in the Celtic belief system, the circle could also be the sun. The four points of the Celtic cross are said to represent the four known natural elements of fire, water, earth and wind. Another explanation is that the four points represent the four corners the earth.

The five sided star or pentacle, is another dominate symbol in Celt history and has found its way into the design of Celtic jewelry. The pentacle is widely associated with practitioners of Wicca and other earth worshiping sects. The symbol has been given a bad name by many orthodox religions. Many orthodox religions equated paganism and earth worship with devil worship. Even today, there are many mostly Christian sects that claim the pentacle Satanism. The Celts saw the symbol in its true sense, representing the various stages of life, birth, childhood, adult life, aging and death.

Another popular form seen in Celtic jewelry is the Claddagh. Graced by a heart held by two hands and a crown, the Claddagh is a universal symbol of love, fidelity and devotion.

Like many other ancient cultures, the Celts placed a great deal of emphasis on animals. This makes given he belief that all life on earth is somehow connected. Very similar to Chinese culture, birds, horses, dogs, fish and serpents all had a special significance. If marketing is the most important part of promoting any business, then why is it that network marketing companies limit the way people are allowed to market? And why is it that very little training, if any, is devoted to actually promoting the product?

You hear the term training and support but the only training you get is how to recruit other people. In a true network marketing company, you don’t get paid for the amount of people that come into your organization, you get paid for moving products. Then why is it that you’re never trained on how to promote your product? Oh yeah I know why…”cause the product sells itself”. Did you know that statement is one of the biggest myths of marketing? Well you know now! Products are solutions. People promote products.

We are also told that being at every business presentation is a necessity if you want to be successful at it. But why is it that one of my mentors is making $1000 a week in his Network Marketing opportunity and has never attended a meeting? NEVER! On top of that, he has people calling him to join his opportunity. Huh?

After being in Network Marketing seven times, I found this to be rather intriguing since every company preached the same thing: share with everyone and dont miss out on an opportunity. Make it to all the local meetings and save up to travel to the big events. Read the books and listen to the audios. Well all that is good and finebut something is obviously missing if this guy is making $4k a month and has never been to any of the meetings. And he admits that its just a side business when my upline told me that my business had to be my life. What?

So whats the deal? Why was this guy finding success despite doing the opposite of what is preached in almost every Network Marketing Opportunity?

The answer? He knows what the product is! If you know what the product is, you can market it effectively. And the product is the same for everyand I mean EVERY opportunity. Its not makeup or detergent or your accounting service or even your compensation plan. Its not anything that makes your company unique. The product is whatever makes YOU unique!

Now many of you may have heard that before. But not many have heard it the way Ive heard it. Ask yourself one questionin my business, what do I have to offer? If the answer doesnt come rolling off your tonguethen youre in trouble! Some of you may say, well thats a really broad question, what do you mean? If youre that person, then you REALLY are in trouble. Im not talking about your company products or the compensation plan. Im talking about YOU!!!
That understanding needs to be AUTOMATIC! You need to always assume that people want to know what YOU can do for them. People dont follow products or compensation plans, people follow other people. Its vital that you understand this concept.

You can talk about your products and how much money you can make until youre blue in the face and your prospect or client wont care. The one thing that we all really care about when choosing people to lead us is.WHAT CAN THAT PERSON DO FOR ME?

Now dont get me wrong, Im not a MLM hater because MLM is a fantastic opportunity where ordinary people can have the lifestyle theyve only dreamed about and pay so little to get started. And I believe everyone deserves that lifestyle. All Im trying to do is help raise the success rate!
